Note:
All these rugs were made from canvas and oddments of rug yarn found in
thrift stores.
Colours in the pattern are only a guideline. They are based on the DMC floss pallette. Print out the pattern instructions in colour, then match the yarn as closely as possible. Substitute as necessary (this was done on all the completed rugs shown) For
a rug that looks as finished on the back, as on the front,
and to prevent the canvas fraying, there are two methods. (Using masking tape is not recommended as it will deteriorate in time, leaving a residue, and the edge will fray) Note: The edges should be folded over, on all sides, BEFORE beginning to hook the rug. 1)
Add 4 rows to the line count on each side (one row less if there is a
finished selvage
edge), then fold over the edges and hook them through as you work the
pattern.
2) Add 4 rows extra to the count on each side, fold the extra in half and tuck under. Hook the inner row of canvas as usual, then whip stitch the edge through each remaining canvas hole with bulky yarn. To make a rug that can hang on the wall, pick a suitable length of dowling or use a curtain or rug rod and then fold over at least 6 rows from the top edge. Hook the very top line edge as usual, but only hook through the double thickness for two or three rows from the bottom (depending on the thickness of your rod). This will leave a sleeve for your stick. |
